This renovated house is located in the Lake District, in northwestern England. Moss Ghyll underwent a complete renovation that transformed this white cottage into a warm, family-friendly retreat.

The designers opted for a soft, country-chic style. Off-white walls, light stone tiles, weathered wood, and burgundy accents create a soothing color palette. Large windows offer views of the Langdale Pikes, the region’s iconic mountain ridges.

The living room centered around the fireplace

The living area occupies the ground floor in a large open space. A black double-sided wood-burning stove takes center stage and connects the living room to the kitchen. The flames are visible from both sides, from the sofa as well as from the dining table. On the floor, large beige limestone slabs extend from one room to the next.

In the living area, two anthracite-gray sofas are arranged in a corner. Ruffled cushions, printed with small patterns, soften this dark shade. In front of them stands a dark wood coffee table. An antique sideboard, its wood weathered by time, rounds out the room’s furnishings.

The kitchen, a blend of marble and raw wood

The U-shaped kitchen extends from the living room. Its ivory-colored Shaker-style cabinet fronts feature aged brass shell-shaped handles. The countertop and backsplash are crafted from spectacular white marble veined with anthracite gray. Beneath the window sits a white ceramic “Irish sink.” A printed Roman shade echoes the terracotta pattern of the living room curtains for added harmony.

The wooden counter that forms a bar contrasts with the simplicity of the kitchen furniture. It is covered with rough-hewn oak planks featuring pronounced grain, which look as though they came straight from an old barn. Above it, two pendant lights with scalloped glass shades and brass fittings cast a soft glow.

A cozy dining room

The dining area features a bow window draped with patterned curtains. The large solid-wood farmhouse table is surrounded by Wishbone chairs with woven rope seats, the classic design created by Hans J. Wegner.

Bedrooms, under the eaves

Upstairs, the three bedrooms are attic-style and feature beautiful exposed beams. The first bedroom embraces a chocolate-brown velvet palette and a cottage-style aesthetic. Its bright white bedding contrasts sharply with this deep hue. The door and baseboards, painted khaki green, harmonize beautifully with the brown tones of the decor.

The second bedroom features a bed entirely upholstered in a striped fabric reminiscent of mattress ticking. Gathered curtains with a small check pattern frame a window overlooking the greenery. In the corner, an antique chair with a straw seat and a wicker basket add a rustic touch.

The third bedroom is distinguished by an arched opening leading to the bathroom. The bed rests on a box spring upholstered in rust-colored velvet, matching the terracotta Vichy-print cushions. A small lamp with a Vichy-print shade echoes this pattern.

The bathrooms, graphic tiles, and brushed brass

The master bathroom features a bold burgundy-and-ivory checkerboard pattern covering an entire wall. Its style is both contemporary and classically chic. The bathtub is enclosed by a simple glass partition, and the walls feature a soft, mineral-like beige concrete-effect finish.

Thi second bathroom takes a different approach with vertical bottle-green and cream tiles. Its shower stall, with gold-finished posts, faces the window. The same white sink and brushed brass fixtures ensure consistency with the main bathroom.

The third bathroom embraces simplicity with walls entirely finished in beige concrete, except for the toilet wall, which features burgundy and white tiles laid in a diamond pattern. Light streams in from a skylight positioned directly above. A towel-warming radiator completes this meticulously designed space.

The entrance and exterior, slate and oak

From the green slate gravel path, the house reveals a white facade with rustic stucco. Its roof is adorned with a dormer window featuring sage green trim. The front door, garage door, and windows all feature this same soft shade. The bow window on the facade is clad in slate laid in a scaly pattern. Tall hedges and a purple maple tree beautifully frame the entire property.

On the garden side, a terrace paved with slate slabs runs along the facade. Large glass doors open directly onto it from the living room. It overlooks a rural landscape of fields stretching as far as the eye can see. Further away, an annex with a solid oak frame houses the wellness area. A uniquely shaped wooden sauna sits alongside a hot tub.

Our take on the decor

A chic country style that avoids clichés

Moss Ghyll features a style that blends cottage charm with modernity. Its designers chose a neutral base in very bright ivory tones. They then added well-balanced pops of color, such as burgundy, terracotta, and khaki. These hues recur from room to room, creating a harmonious thematic thread. Fabrics play a key role with their ruffles, scalloped edges, stripes, and Vichy checks. The interplay between antique furniture and more contemporary lines is a success. A period dresser stands next to a minimalist sink, while a weathered sideboard faces modern sofas.

Windermere and the Lake District

Moss Ghyll is located on the edge of Windermere, a town nestled on the shore of England’s largest natural lake. The Lake District is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can go hiking or take boat tours to explore its quaint villages. From the house, the view stretches all the way to the Langdale Pikes, peaks popular with hikers.
