Perched on the heights of Mount Lebanon in the U.S., this historic Shaker-style house overlooks 75 hectares of forests, meadows, and streams. The Airbnb listing describes it as a former caretaker’s house, nestled in the heart of an authentic Shaker village founded in the late 18th century. Carefully renovated, it blends antique furniture and period pieces with contemporary comforts. It’s an interior designed for recharging your batteries far from the city. The screened porch opens onto the hills of the Berkshires and the Taconic Mountains, offering an idyllic and exotic panorama.

A Shaker-style kitchen

Although the kitchen is brand-new, it has a rustic style that seems as though it has always been there. The owners chose gray-blue Shaker-style cabinetry to furnish it. This soft, matte shade echoes the historic furniture of the neighboring village. A backsplash of lime-washed tiles covers the wall behind the stove. Solid wood shelves replace the usual wall cabinets, visually lightening the space. They provide a place to display lovely tableware that serves as both decorative and practical items.

The countertop is made of gray stone, a durable and easy-to-maintain surface. An antique wooden table and Windsor chairs upholstered in weathered leather are set up in the adjoining dining room. Large glass doors, framed in raw wood, let in light and allow you to fully enjoy the view of the hills. A red-and-blue floral rug adds warmth to the hardwood floor and ties the kitchen and dining area together.

An intimate living room centered around the wood-burning stove

A bulbous, burgundy-colored wood-burning stove sits prominently in front of a patinated brick wall. Its thick black pipe runs diagonally across the room to the brick flue. It’s not exactly discreet, it’s true, but it doesn’t try to be. We’re in a rustic home, so it fits perfectly. The gray sofa covered in a crinkled linen slipcover anchors the living room, topped with throws and pillows.

A gallery of antique portraits adorns the back wall, giving it the feel of a family home where one might come to relax for a few days. A white-washed wooden secretary serves as a desk and complements the living room’s furnishings with its matching style. This room blends rustic comfort with collectible pieces with great finesse.

Bedrooms with a vintage feel

Each bedroom features a black wrought-iron bed, typical of late 19th-century American country homes. An antique dresser takes center stage in the first bedroom. In another bedroom, a white bouclé-upholstered armchair adds a more contemporary touch, placed next to a two-tone dresser in light wood and black.

Articulated brass lamps hang over the solid pine nightstands, which are piled high with books. Two navy-and-white-striped stools sit at the foot of the bed in the most spacious room. Wicker baskets sit on the floor. These rooms transport you to another era, perhaps a gentler one, and are perfect for enjoying long, restful nights.

A bathroom decorated in pale blue

The bathroom combines handcrafted tilework with antique furniture while maintaining the modern comforts we can’t do without in the 21st century (even on the weekend!). Its pale blue hue and weathered, intentionally irregular tiles completely cover the walk-in shower. The floor features blue and white cement patterns, evoking a Mediterranean feel. A veined marble sink rests on a vintage-style chrome base that gives the piece a lighter look.

An antique carved wooden mirror hangs above the sink, contrasting with the more understated lines of the rest of the room. The antique window lets in soft light. This combination of antique materials and modern finishes works beautifully.

The porch and brick pavilion, sheltered yet outdoors

The porch extends the living room outward and opens wide onto the landscape. A folding bistro table and iron chairs invite you to sit down, read, or have a coffee while enjoying the unspoiled natural surroundings. The view stretches across the pine trees, meadows, and neighboring hills, all the way to the mountainous horizon. Further back in the garden, a red-brick pavilion topped with a slate roof houses a woven rattan sofa. This small pavilion, framed by stone and climbing ivy, is reminiscent of European garden gazebos.

Our take on the decor

This decor strikes a beautiful balance between rustic style and elegance. Each room tells a story, that of a bygone era when people cherished handmade items that would last for generations. The choice of blue-gray hues, found everywhere from the house’s facade to the bathroom, helps tie the spaces together. Antique furniture coexists with more contemporary pieces, such as the tufted armchair or the living room sofa, since it’s harder to find this style of furniture that’s truly comfortable and practical for seating. Yet they blend perfectly with the rest of the decor.

What can inspire us in this historic Shaker-style house

This cottage offers great ideas for our country homes. The combination of antique furniture and soft colors is timeless. Open solid-wood shelves are a great alternative to overly heavy upper cabinets in a kitchen, for example.

The gallery of antique portraits is a lovely idea, it effortlessly adorns a wall, and this type of artwork is fairly easy to find at our flea markets. The pale blue zellige tiles in the bathroom are reminiscent of our Provençal or Portuguese tiles. Finally, the central wood-burning stove is practical for a home that’s sometimes occupied only part-time during the colder months.

The house's surroundings

This cottage is located in New Lebanon, on the border between New York and Massachusetts. The village was once home to one of the largest Shaker communities in the United States, founded in the late 18th century. The Berkshires and the Taconic Mountains feature a rolling landscape and are perfect for hiking.
