Named “Ses Portes Vermelles,” this house featuring exposed stone and beams was built in 1967 in the Sóller Valley on the island of Mallorca. Set on the historic lands of Binibassi and fully renovated a few years ago, this 329-square-meter finca enjoys a rare location. We discover it in a landscape designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with the peaks of the Tramuntana Mountains in the background. Orange trees heavy with fruit line the paved driveway leading to the entrance. Fuchsia-colored bougainvillea spills over the dry-stone facade.

Materials first

The renovation made a clear choice: to respect what existed at the time of construction. The floors feature natural stone from Binissalem, a local limestone with sandy and cream tones that absorbs heat in winter and stays cool in summer. Its exposed beams, dark and rough, run through every room. They have not been repainted or concealed. The front door sets the tone. Thick wood studded with wrought iron, a hook-shaped handle, antique hinges. Behind it, the staircase rises gently toward an arched window.

Authentic and beautiful interiors

The living room embraces a rustic-chic, minimalist aesthetic. A cream-colored corner sofa with kilim cushions, a wool ottoman, a wicker basket filled with firewood. Light streams in through wooden-framed windows. It filters through the linen curtains. It casts rectangles of light onto the stone floor. Upstairs, the glass-enclosed veranda offers a different atmosphere. Here, the house opens up to the panoramic view. Dark timber framing the large windows. Two natural linen armchairs face the mountains.

The bedrooms maintain the same understated elegance. Herringbone parquet, a blackened wood desk, a woven blanket with soft stripes. The arched windows open onto the canopy of orange trees.

The garden as a living space

This may be where this finca’s greatest asset lies. The garden does not merely decorate the house, it extends it. A covered terrace is furnished with a large rough-hewn wooden table, gray rattan chairs, and coconut fiber pendant lights. The dry-stone walls serve as a backdrop.

Further on, the large saltwater pool nestles among the palm trees and shrubs. It is visible from the terraces and catches the morning sun. With umbrella pines, cypresses, and olive trees, it is a Mediterranean enchantment. The garden also produces its own citrus fruits, avocados, almonds, and figs. A true paradise on earth, so to speak.
