This renovated historic home was once a hydroelectric power plant

Thanks to its owner, a former hydroelectric power plant has been given a new lease on life on the banks of a peaceful river. Located on the banks of the Sandy River in Maine, this renovated historic home was built in the late 19th century. For many years, it supplied electricity to this remote region. After the dam was demolished in 2006, the building stood empty. Years later, photographer Mandy Lamb discovered this raw, almost forgotten place and decided to make it her home. Despite the site’s condition, she saw its potential and envisioned an open, simple home. The walls have regained their luster, the original windows have been restored, and the concrete floor has been preserved. Here, nothing is perfectly smooth, and that is precisely what gives the whole space its character.

 

Discovering the house

Inside, the spaciousness is impressive, with nearly six-meter-high ceilings and large windows opening onto the natural surroundings. The kitchen is centered around a large solid-wood table. The furnishings blend antique pieces with modern finds, accented by unexpected pops of color. In the living room, a wood-burning stove radiates gentle warmth, accompanied by the calm presence of the dog. The contrast between the industrial architecture and the serene setting creates a unique atmosphere.

Its bedroom is intentionally simple, facing the outdoor landscapes that change with the seasons. The bathroom features a freestanding bathtub and pieces sourced from throughout the region. Nestled between the river and the fields, this home offers a calm, almost timeless way of life. The vegetation has reclaimed its place, surrounding the house without overwhelming it. This transformation has not erased the past; it has left it visible by preserving the details that make the building beautiful.
